Dr. Matthew Seftel MBChB MPH FRCP FRCPC

It is with much pride that I welcome Dr. Matthew Seftel to the editorial staff of Current Oncology.

Coming from a distinguished family of physicians, Matthew obtained his medical degree from the University of Cape Town, South Africa, and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (London, United Kingdom) and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. In addition, he has a master’s degree in Public Health from Johns Hopkins University.

Dr. Seftel is currently department head of Hematology and Oncology at CancerCare Manitoba and the section of Hematology/Oncology, Department of Internal Medicine, University of Manitoba, where he holds an associate professorship. He has supervised numerous research projects and postgraduate theses and received a number of teaching and service awards.

Matthew is no stranger to peer review committees, having participated in such committees for Canadian Institutes of Health Research and other granting agencies and trial groups at the ncic. He is sought after by many journal review boards. His credits include more than 80 peer-reviewed publications and 4 book chapters, as well as numerous peer-reviewed abstracts.

Dr. Seftel’s research interests include leukemia epidemiology and clinical trials in leukemia and lymphoma, including blood and marrow transplantation. He is an investigator with the Canadian Cancer Trials Group and the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research.

Outside of work, Matt enjoys long-distance running (despite the prairie weather), which sometimes includes running after his two energetic young boys, Gus and Leo.

Effective January 2017, Dr. Seftel has been appointed Associate Managing Editor for Current Oncology. All of us at the journal look forward to working with Matthew and welcoming him to our team. We are confident that, together, we will continue to ensure Current Oncology’s place as Canada’s premier cancer research journal.
