Critiques say that Community Medicine teaching in India, more often than not, focuses on providing some information on many topics but less often helps in developing in-depth and detailed understanding of any topic. Well, there is perhaps an opportunity to silence them as a new book titled “A handbook of Rabies: a comprehensive update” has been written by three authors led by Dr. Ashok Mishra from the GR Medical College, Gwalior. The book comprehensively covers the key aspects of Rabies-from epidemiology to case management and vaccination-usually not covered in standard textbooks of Preventive and Social Medicine. The book has updated information with color illustrations, is well–referenced and structured in sections, which help in finding the desired information easily. One of the strengths of the book under review is that it is comprehensive and detailed, without being filled with nonessential information, for example, various vaccination schedule recommended as prophylaxis have been provided. This is precisely what gives this a small handbook a position and potential for a big beginning to set the trend in Community Medicine teaching in India, to make in-depth knowledge and comprehensive books as a norm. As and when authors would plan to prepare the next edition, it could be further improved by tabulating some information, providing more India specific and state-level epidemiology of Rabies and an index to facilitate the easy search. This book is an useful reading for the students of Community Medicine (undergraduate and postgraduate alike), of Epidemiology, the medical college faculty, and practitioners, who deal with dog-bites in their office practice.
