The sexual reproduction of basidiomycetes has been studied for almost 100 years using this agaricomycete, revealing complex mating type loci with multiple allelic specificities and multiple subloci for both homeodomain transcription factor and pheromone receptor mating type loci. The recent sequencing of basidiomycetes including S. commune now enables identification of additional genes not analyzed before and characterization of the signal transduction pathways leading to induction of sexual reproduction and fruiting-body formation (photo courtesy of E.-M.
