Cells have been fixed and treated for observation by epifluorescence microscopy; cellular actin is labeled with the phalloidin Alexa Fluor 647 (blue), and DNA is labeled with 4′,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) (for which a red color has been assigned using Adobe Photoshop). Actin comet tails can be detected at the pole of some intracellular bacteria. (See related article on page 3625.)
