Cover photograph (Copyright © 2010, American Society for Microbiology. All Rights Reserved.): Lactococcus lactis SK11 cells containing glutathione (GSH) exhibit increased expression of enzymes involved in sugar metabolism. Shown is a schematic representation of the metabolic pathways of L. lactis SK11 that respond to the presence/absence of GSH with or without exposure to osmotic stress. Upregulated proteins are indicated by red arrows, whereas downregulated proteins are in green. The width of an arrow represents the relative abundance of that protein, which was calculated by multiplying or dividing the width of the baseline arrow for unstressed GSH-negative cells by the change in the level of protein expression. (See related article on page 3177.)
