Cover photograph (Copyright © 2010, American Society for Microbiology. All Rights Reserved.): Image shows mouse fibroblasts infected with murine polyomavirus (MPyV) and stained for large T antigen (red), an early viral gene product, 24 h postinfection. Cells were colabeled with FITC-phalloidin to visualize actin (green) and DAPI to visualize cell nuclei (blue). The original fluorescence microscopy image was digitally enhanced in Adobe Photoshop to outline the edges of cellular structures. Inhibition of host cell Abl family kinases prior to infection results in downregulation of cell surface levels of sialylated ganglioside receptors for MPyV, decreased binding of virions to the cell surface, and a subsequent decrease in infected cells.
