Dear Section Members,
It is hard for me to believe that I have completed my first year serving as our Section's President. The time has flown, and I have learned much. I am grateful for the help I have received from many of you and I very much appreciate those who agreed to take on extra jobs when I needed volunteers. It has made my job much easier! Our Section has continued to grow in members, and we are in good financial standing.
Our Section has had a productive year. We established a new Mentoring Award to recognize members of our Section whose careers have resulted in the mentoring of professionals who have subsequently served others through their teaching, scholarship, and/or clinical practice. Selection criteria and the nomination process are posted on our web page. The selection is made by December 1, and the award is presented at the subsequent Combined Sections Meeting, so please consider nominating someone for the 2009 meeting. Our first recipient will be recognized in Nashville, TN during our membership reception and meeting.
The Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Section was the first recipient of the APTA's newly established Community Awareness Grant. We received $5,000 to develop 2 brochures; a Pulmonary Physical Therapy brochure and a Cardiovascular Physical Therapy brochure. These brochures are being designed to hand out to consumers, legislators, etc. to increase awareness of the role of physical therapy in cardiovascular and pulmonary pathology. The Public Relations Committee has been busy working on these brochures and we hope to have them in press in the very near future.
We have established liaisons with the Preventive Cardiology Nursing Association and the American Thoracic Society and we are exploring a relationship with the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation. We hope these liaisons will lead to future collaborative efforts that will enhance the visibility of our Section and the role physical therapy can play in these areas.
I would like to thank Joe Norman, PT, PhD, CCS, FAACVPR who has been on our Nominating Committee for 3 years, and served as the Chair during 2007. He is rotating off this committee. Joe oversaw putting our elections online and slated a full ballot with multiple candidates. Thank you, Joe, for all of your efforts. I would also like to thank Diane Madras, PT, PhD who for a number of years managed our Section's web site. She is continuing in her role of overseeing our cardiopt listserve. Thank you, Diane, for all of your work for our Section.
I am looking forward to the second year of my term. I continue to be impressed with how hard the Board works to further our Section. They are a talented and dedicated group!
Respectfully submitted, Ethel M. Frese, PT, DPT, MHS, CCS President
