Cover photograph (Copyright © 2010, American Society for Microbiology. All Rights Reserved.): Microcolony of Pseudomonas aeruginosa formed on cultured human airway epithelial cells. P. aeruginosa expressing green fluorescent protein (green) was cocultured with airway cell monolayers in the presence of arginine. The image was taken on an inverted epifluorescence microscope and represents an overlay of the green channel (P. aeruginosa) on the phase contrast channel. This microcolony developed on the epithelial layer within 8 h and displays many properties of biofilms. Formation of such coculture biofilms provides a unique opportunity to study virulence gene regulation in biofilms within the context of infection. (See related article on p. 1239.)
