Cover photograph (Copyright © 2010, American Society for Microbiology. All Rights Reserved.): Predicted model for SloR-DNA interaction in Streptococcus mutans. SloR is a 25-kDa metalloregulatory protein that binds as a homodimer to conserved palindromic sequences on the S. mutans chromosome when manganese (spheres) is available. Two winged alpha helices at its N terminus constitute a predicted DNA binding interface that fits within the major grooves of the palindrome. Such binding modulates expression of essential metal ion uptake/transport proteins as well as virulence traits that contribute to cariogenesis. The homology model was derived from the crystal structure of the SloR homolog in Corynebacterium diphtheriae, DtxR (pdb1c0w). (See related article on page 1433.)
