Cover photograph (Copyright © 2010, American Society for Microbiology. All Rights Reserved.): Scanning electron micrograph of Francisella tularenis subsp. novicida attaching to a crab shell. Growth of the microorganism on this chitinous surface in the absence of exogenous carbon suggests that chitin is a nutritive source in nature for this highly virulent pathogen. Biofilm formation on natural chitin surfaces such as zooplankton and arthropod vectors may promote persistence and transmission of this bacterium throughout the environment.
