The newly updated ASCO Patient Guide: Hormone Therapy for Advanced Prostate Cancer helps patients and their families understand ASCO recommendations for treatment strategies for androgen-sensitive prostate cancer. This patient guide is based on ASCO's updated clinical practice guideline on the same topic. In patient-friendly language, it includes an introduction to androgen-deprivation therapies and their common adverse effects, ASCO recommendations, a brief analysis of what the recommendations mean for patients, questions patients can ask their doctors, and a list of resources for additional information. This guide is available on ASCO's patient information Web site, People Living With Cancer (PLWC), at www.plwc.org/patientguides as a text-only format and a PDF.
PLWC continues to increase its content for Spanish-speaking patients and their families. Recent additions include translations on how to cope with more than 25 of the most common adverse effects from cancer and treatments, including nausea and vomiting, pain, fatigue, lymphedema, anemia, and dry mouth. What's more, PLWC is translating some of ASCO's most popular Patient Guides, including publications on fertility preservation, follow-up care for breast cancer, and follow-up care for colorectal cancer. Other content additions will be made on an ongoing basis. All Spanish content on PLWC can be found at www.plwc.org/espanol or www.plwc.org/spanish.
PLWC has started a new Q&A format as part of its feature articles section, entitled the “ASCO Expert Corner” series. In each article, an ASCO member will answer questions about a timely cancer topic. To date, Maurie Markman, MD, has answered questions about the human papillomavirus/cervical cancer vaccine; A. William Blackstock, MD, reviewed the findings announced at the 2007 Gastrointestinal Cancers Symposium; and Dean Bajorin, MD, FACP, explained the key research from the 2007 Prostate Cancer Symposium. Upcoming articles will cover understanding the informed consent process and the occurrence of cancer treatments' long-term adverse effects to the heart and lungs for adult survivors.
The ASCO Expert Corner is a monthly addition to the library of PLWC features, which now total more than 120 articles and can be found at www.plwc.org/features. A new feature is posted every Monday.
To learn more about PLWC and ASCO's other patient information resources, stop by the ASCO booth at the 2007 ASCO Annual Meeting, June 1 to 5, Chicago, Illinois.
Among the materials distributed, there will be a special Cancer Advances newsletter, available the final program day, summarizing research highlighted in ASCO's press program. In addition, ASCO members can order “waiting room” promotional items and a supply of patient-friendly materials to share PLWC with their patients.
Also, encourage your patients to visit www.plwc.org, particularly during the week of the Annual Meeting to hear special PLWC Podcasts and read “ASCO Expert Corner” feature articles explaining the meeting's breaking news. PLWC's extensive coverage will give patients and the general public a greater perspective on the importance of new research findings announced at the Annual Meeting that will be reported by the national media. PLWC will also include links to related content and recommended reading to give people with cancer a context for the headlines they may read.
