Cell wall chitin (blue), chitooligomers (red), and capsular glucuronoxylomannan (green) are components of the cell envelope of cryptococci. Regulation of chitin synthesis by a synthetic inhibitor affects cellular morphology and capsular dimensions, suggesting a role for this structural polymer in the assembly of the cell surface of C. neoformans.
