Dr Helmkamp holds a BS in Biology from the University of South Carolina, Columbia, South Carolina, USA, an MS in Environmental Health from Tulane University, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, and a PhD in Epidemiology from the University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. Prior to his current position as Director of the West Virginia University Injury Control Research Center, Morgantown, West Virginia, USA, he was the Interim Director and Epidemiologist for the WVU Center for Rural Emergency Medicine, Morgantown, West Virginia, USA. Before beginning his academic career in 1997, he retired from the US Navy after 25 years of active service. He has made over 65 oral and poster presentations at state, national, and international conferences and symposia, and has authored or co-authored over 60 articles in peer-review journals. His current research interests include recreational and occupational injuries. Dr Helmkamp is a Fellow in the American College of Epidemiology, Raleigh, North Carolina, USA, and holds the rank of Research Professor in the WVU Department of Community Medicine, Morgantown, West Virginia, USA.
