This paper represents a very nice observational study of MR imaging findings of the lumbar spine in young asymptomatic elite tennis players. According to the author's conclusion, early degenerative changes of the lumbar spine in tennis players have a slightly different presentation compared to the general population or lumbar spine abnormalities in other sport disciplines. The manuscript is illustrated with high quality images, and imaging findings are well correlated with the biomechanics of tennis. Rotational forces, extension and flexion have a major impact on the posterior elements and pars interarticularis of the lumbar spine. Future studies on a larger cohort of tennis players are, however, required to validate the preliminary results of the current study.
