Joseph Callistus Devlin (“Joe”) started his career in general practice in Belfast, later qualifying in psychiatry at Manchester University. He was consultant psychiatrist at North Manchester General Hospital for over 40 years. He also treated patients for 10 years at Strangeways prison in Manchester.
Joe had many and varied interests, including going to race meetings, listening to classical music, the Hallé Orchestra in particular. He also enjoyed travelling and speaking French. In the 1970s he served as a councillor for the Bury area, with a special interest in local social services.
He leaves a wife, Annie; four children; and 10 grandchildren.
Former consultant psychiatrist North Manchester General Hospital (b Glenarm, County Antrim, Northern Ireland 1930; q Queen's University, Belfast, 1954; DPM, MRCPsych), died from metastatic liver disease on 8 August 2007.
