Ed Wood trained as a general and vascular surgeon in the Glasgow Royal Infirmary, having completed his house jobs in Hereford and post-registration appointments in obstetrics and accident and emergency medicine in Birmingham. He was appointed consultant surgeon in 1974 but sadly had to retire on grounds of ill health in 1989.
During his time as a medical student he learnt to fly. He was an avid reader and extremely knowledgeable on a wide range of topics, and this, coupled with an encyclopaedic memory, led to him being in great demand as a quiz master, a role which he relished. In retirement his other great interests were jazz and cricket and painting. He is survived by his former wife, Jane; partner, Jed; and his three children and three grandchildren.
Former consultant surgeon Royal Alexandria Hospital, Rhyl (b 1937; q Birmingham 1961; FRCSEd), died from a myocardial infarction on 26 August 2006.
