Barbara worked continuously full time since qualifying and initially entered general practice in Birmingham and Manchester. She worked for 10 years as a clinical assistant at Manchester Children's Hospital and subsequently became assistant county medical officer in Cheshire. In 1968 she was promoted to senior clinical medical officer, a post which she continued until her retirement in 1989. She specialised in community child health with particular interest in developmental problems. She was also a past president of the Manchester Medical Women's Federation.
Barbara was known for her dedication to her patients and fought tirelessly for their interests in times of limited resources. She always maintained her sense of humour and was the collector of many comical medical stories for which she became renowned.
She leaves three children (two medically qualified) and nine grandchildren.
Former senior clinical medical officer in Cheshire (b Shaw 1924; q Birmingham 1947; MFCM), died suddenly but peacefully on 6 March 2007.
