Martin Ryan joined the Royal Army Medical Corps after house jobs at Preston Royal Infirmary and served in Italy during the second world war. He joined his father's general practice at Withy House, Bamber Bridge, after the war and, together with his wife, Dr Maire Bellow (deceased), served the people of Bamber Bridge, Preston, for 45 years. He was also prison medical officer for many years and retired in 1991. He was a most respected colleague with a keen sense of duty to his community and a committed Catholic. He was a great sports enthusiast and a lifelong supporter of Lancashire County Cricket Club and Preston North End Football Club. He leaves two sons, one of whom is a facio-maxillary surgeon in the north east, and two grandchildren.
