A 55 year old woman with multiple urological problems recently had a suprapubic catheter changed under general anaesthetic. During the procedure she developed a wheal and flare reaction to the nitrile gloves worn by staff when they were maintaining the airway.airway. Nitrile gloves are not always “non-allergenic” as is commonly believed. Most gloves made from nitrile are produced with the same accelerator, mercaptobenzathiazole, as some latex gloves. People with suspected irritant or allergic reactions to latex gloves may also react to nitrile.
