Barry Roper qualified with honours and pursued a career in general medicine, becoming a senior registrar in cardiology at Dudley Road Hospital. He achieved MRCP (London) in 1964 and DMRD (London) in 1966.
Barry had a great interest in radiology and embarked on a new career pathway in 1964. He had a passion for the subject and studied it with fervour. He researched the topic, publishing some of his findings, and worked with some of the United Kingdom's top radiologists. Barry was appointed consultant radiologist at Bridgend General Hospital in August 1968. He transferred to Neath General, covering Port Talbort, Cymla, and Ystradgynlais, and worked singlehandedly, being the only radiologist on site for 16 years. He had a special interest in fetal abnormalities and introduced ultrasound scanning as well as angiography into the area. He loved his work, which was extremely important to him, and continued practice until his retirement in 1999. He also loved his family, leaving a wife, a son, a daughter, and a 6 month old grandson. Other interests included French, which he spoke fluently, and the English language.
Barry died suddenly at home in the presence of his family.
