Rembrandt's Anatomy Lesson to be shown in London

An upcoming exhibition at the National Gallery in London is to include the iconic Rembrandt painting The Anatomy Lesson of Dr Nicolaes Tulp—which has not been seen in the UK for 40 years.years.

In the picture, which was commissioned by the Amsterdam surgeons' guild, Dr Tulp is shown conducting an anatomy demonstration on the body of an executed criminal. Several physicians crowd at the head of the cadaver, observing the lesson with rapt attention.

The painting, which dates from 1632, is on loan from the Royal Picture Gallery Mauritshuis, The Hague.


Dutch Portraits: The Age of Rembrandt and Frans Hals runs at the National Gallery from 27 June to 16 September.
