John Montgomery Bowen and Marjorie Ethel Bowen (née Bright)

Marjorie Ethel Bowen (née Bright), former general practitioner (b 1915; q Cardiff 1939; BSc), d 13 December 2006.

From 1950 to 1980 Jack was consultant in obstetrics and gynaecology at the Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport, initially covering the obstetric care for the whole of Monmouthshire. He told many stories of travelling through snow on the back of a tractor to rescue mothers and deliver babies in the Welsh valleys.

He later became an examiner for the MRCOG and for a long period was the assessor of maternal deaths in Wales.

Jack was captain of the Cardiff Medical Students Rugby Team and was a life long follower of rugby.

During the war he served with the Royal Air Force in Africa.

Marjorie Bowen, after excelling at medical school in Cardiff, worked in general practice. In latter years she was appointed to the medical assessment boards and as a justice of the peace.

Jack and Marjorie married in 1939 and shared many hobbies, excelling in golf, bridge, and gardening, and they were keen members of the Gynae Travel Club for many years.

They leave two sons, Michael (in New Zealand) and John (in Tenby), both general practitioners, and five grandchildren.
